This authoritative work contains coatings data in a format that makes it easy to find what you're looking for.

Coatings are arranged alphabetically by trade name with data for more than 1000 coatings from more than 200 companies.

Each listing includes manufacturer, process type, coating type, substrate type, coating properties, applications, and coating description. Cross references also are included where available.

The main section contains an alphabetical listing of trade names and commercial names of coatings and processes; manufacturer contact information including address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address, and internet website.

Data format is similar to the alloy listings in the popular Woldman's Engineering Alloys.

Listings include:
  • Plating
  • Electroplating
  • Selective plating
  • Nonelectrolytic deposition
  • Anodizing
  • Dip, barrier and chemical conversion coatings
Preface

The challenge in compiling a database on coatings is to satisfy the wide spectrum of interests represented in such a book. The topics covered here include organic coatings (paints) and their process cycles, the many types loosely placed under the heading "electroplating," and the modern and varied processes and coatings obtained by the generalized term "vacuum deposition." Along the way, we included less easily categorizable topics, such as electroless plating and conversion coatings, and uncategorizable topics or "others," for those that are unique or uncanny.

We hope we provided a reference in which the reader can search one of the general categories with a tradename in mind, find it in the index, and obtain a capsule of information on what the coating or process provides. With this information, the reader will know if the item fulfills the necessary requirements and can contact the manufacturer or supplier for details. In the surface engineering field, such information can save enormous amounts of time.

This volume was compiled from information supplied by various manufacturers and suppliers in the coatings industry. We contacted as many related firms as we could identify. Despite name changes, mergers, new incorporations, and yes, insolvencies, we felt we were quite successful. The material included was gleaned from commercial information obtained either from people responding to our inquiries or through the growing resources of the World Wide Web. Without the assistance of the various segments in the coatings industry, this volume would not be possible. Considerable thanks go to everyone who took the time to provide information for this project, directly or indirectly.

The data given within each entry are generally selected from a broader listing. We selected the properties that we felt were pertinent to someone seeking a capsule view of an item. An engineer seeking an optical coating would be primarily interested in the optical properties. Though the information might be important later, he would be less needful of thermal or strength properties within his initial search. Such supplementary properties and other more detailed information could then be obtained from the manufacturer or supplier.
